While Glee originally chose to close the Lima, Ohio chapter of the series for the second half of the fifth season, it is now being reopened with five new cast members for the thirteen-episode sixth and final season.
The best (or worst) part? All five new characters are sophomores at William McKinley High School. TVLine broke the news with a brief description of each character and they are all there from twin cheerleaders to gay-football stars. Murphy had told TVLine that the final season would return to the roots of why this journey began as he said, “It’s getting back to what I was initially interested in with the show, which was arts in school. The last season is really about the importance of arts education in our high schools… I think people will like it.”
There is the new underdog Roderick who is, “chubby and shy with a voice like Otis Redding.” Then Spencer who is the “football stud” with the awesome voice who happens to be gay but no worries, this will not be another Kurt Hummel as he is, “post-Glee gay — no one messes with him about his sexuality because he will kick their asses if they do.” Next is Jane, a pretty girl with no sense of humor (which naturally makes her hysterical) who tried to join the Warblers but goes to the New Directions when she doesn’t fit (or have) the parts. Wrapping it up is the male and female twin Cheerio duo Mason and Madison and while Mason gives off a homosexual vibe, he is not.
Now there should be no hard feelings to the other McKinley High kids who never made it to graduation, as we will not be seeing them since the sixth season includes a time jump and move away from New York reports E! Online.
I have a number of questions swirling in my head right now that I hope the show can answer come January including: Why more high school kids? It didn’t work last time! How can there be a New Directions when the choir room is now a computer lab? Will the originals come face to face with the new kids? Is this the return of Will Schuester and Sue Sylvester?
The final thirteen-episode season comes back on Fox this January.
