HBO announced on Wednesday that it has picked up The Leftovers for a second season. The show was created by Lost’s Damon Lindelof and based on Tom Perrotta’s novel of the same name. Its ensemble cast is headlined by Justin Theroux.
The Leftovers is an HBO original production, produced with White Rabbit and Warner Bros. TV. Lindelof is the showrunner.
“We are thrilled to bring back The Leftovers for a second season with the exceptional talents of Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta,” HBO Programming president Michael Lombardo said in a statement. “It has been truly exciting to see the overwhelming response to their provocative and original storytelling. We look forward to continuing the journey as the show delves deeper into the lives of those who remain.”
The show is set in a world where two percent of the earth’s population suddenly disappeared. Some thing it was The Rapture, others think there are other causes. Theroux plays a police chief in Mapleton, a fictional New York suburb where everyone has lost someone they know in the “Sudden Departure.”
Other members of the cast include Amy Brenneman, Christopher Eccleston, Liv Tyler, Chris Zylka, Margaret Qualley, Carrie Coon, Emily Meade, Amanda Warren, Ann Dowd, Michael Gaston, Max and Charlie Carver, and Annie Q.
The Leftovers began on June 29 and airs on Sundays at 10 p.m. The first season finale is set for Sept. 7.
