It wouldn't be the MTV Video Music Awards without a bit of controversy and this year, at the center of the controversy is none other than the Royal Family of reality television, the Kardashians.
During the awards ceremony, rapper Common came onstage to present the award for "Best Hip-Hop Video." Common took the opportunity to speak about the shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. After his speech, Common requested that the attendees participate in a moment of silence. According to The Mirror, at some point during the moment of silence, cameras cut away to the Kardashian/Jenner siblings who were seen on their phones.
The girls were immediately bashed when screenshots of the girls on their phones were posted on social media.

It appears that Kendall Jenner was the primary culprit but other screencaps show Kim and Kylie looking at their phones as well.
But according to Bustle, the girls may have an out. The MTV Video Music Awards run on a 30-second-delay, so although the girls may have appeared to be texting, they may not have actually been on their phones while the Ferguson tribute was happening.
