Kristen Stewart is well aware how she looks to the public when she doesn’t smile in paparazzi photos because she’s doing it on purpose.

The Twilight Saga star told Elle she doesn’t smile in any photos taken by paparazzi because she doesn’t want people to think she’s a “sellout.”

"Now I feel like if I smiled for a paparazzi photo -- not that I ever would -- that’s exactly what people would be desecrating me for. They’d be like, 'Now you’re going to give it up! Now you’re a sellout.' Like, OK. What do you want? What would you like?" she said.

She also smartened up pretty quickly when she realized how big of a phenomenon Twilight would be, admitting she never really thought about the consequences of her actions until she was photographed and splashed across the front page of a newspaper.

“The day the movie came out there was a picture of me—in the New York Post, I think,” she said. “I was sitting on my front porch, smoking a pipe with my ex-boyfriend and dog. And I was like, Oh shit, well, I have to be aware of that.”

Stewart, who is the face of Chanel’s pre-fall collection, also said she’s never planned out her career for fear of turning into a “bag of chips.”

She shared her thoughts on planning out her career like a “trajectory,” saying if she did that, she could never live in the moment.

"Then you’re truly, actually, specifically working for the public. You’re turning yourself into a bag of chips,” she said.
