Major League Soccer will lose one of its greatest players ever once Landon Donovan retires following the 2014 season.
Donovan posted on his facebook page that he will be retiring at the end of the season and he thanked his fans for the support over the years.
“I plan to express my gratitude to everyone in a more detailed manner at a later date; however, for now, I want to single out the fans. You are the lifeblood of this sports and, without you, none of us would be fortunate to call ourselves professional soccer players in MLS.”
Donovan is the all-time leading goal scorer for the both the MLS and the American national team. He has won the MLS cup five times with the LA Galaxy and the San Jose Earthquakes.
He has also been named the MLS All-Star Game MVP twice, including this year’s games when he scored the game winner against Bayern Munich.
He played in three World Cups and scored five of his record 57 goals in them, according to ESPN FC.
