For the second time this week, Broadway will go dark in memory of a show business legend. Last night, the Great White Way paid tribute to Robin Williams and Friday will be Lauren Bacall’s turn.
Bacall died on Tuesday night at age 89. She will always be remembered for her iconic screen roles, but she also had a passion for the theater and performed on Broadway countless times during her career.
She even linked Broadway to the movies. In 1970, she won her first Tony Award for Applause, the musical based on the 1950 Bette Davis classic All About Eve. Then, in 1981, she won a second Tony for the musical based on the Spencer Tracy/Katharine Hepburn movie Woman of the Year.
Her first Broadway appearance came during a walk on role in 1942’s Johnny 2 x 4 and she was then cast in Franklin Street.

“Lauren Bacall had a distinct presence on stage and screen during a career that spanned decades,” Charlotte St. Martin, Executive Director of The Broadway League, said in a statement. “Along with her talent and memorable performances, her timeless beauty and witty intelligence will be remembered. Our thoughts are with her family, friends and fans.”
The marquees on Broadway will go dim at 7:45 p.m. Friday night for exactly one minute in her memory.
