Lucy Hale, the star of ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars, appears on the cover of the new Cosmopolitan issue, in which she revealed that she did audition for Fifty Shades of Grey. She didn’t get the part, obviously, but she wasn’t shy about talking about the process.

In the interview, she said that auditioning to play Anastasia Steele was “so uncomfortable.” She said the script she was given was exactly what fans of the novels would expect.

“It's exactly what you thought it would be: a big monologue but very, very sexual,” she explained. Still, she remained professional and got through the audition.

“There were some things that I was so embarrassed to be reading out loud, but it's one of those things where you have to commit wholeheartedly or you're going to make a fool of yourself,” Hale said.

As Us Weekly points out, Hale’s father was probably happy that the role went to Dakota Johnson instead. She shared a text message from her father on Instagram, in which her dad said she “looked wonderful” on the cover, but he wasn’t too crazy about the captions that surround her. “Hahah thanks dad,” Hale replied.

Also in her Cosmopolitan interview, she was asked about Hollywood’s obsession with image. She said that PPL is “...about how we look too.” She continued, “That's terrifying sometimes because you're breaking out or you feel gross and you still have to be in front of the camera. We'll post pictures on Instagram and people will be like, ‘Y'all are so flawless.’ Little do they know it's fake hair, fake eyelashes, and a good filter. Little girls see that and think they have to be like that.”

Hale, 25, just released her first country album, Road Between, which features “Lie A Little Better.”
