Manchester City, last season's English Premier League champions, opened their 2014-2015 campaign with a 2-0 win over Newcastle United on Sunday. City used goals from David Silva and Sergio Agüero to make sure their season got off on the right track.

Silva opened the scoring in the 35th minute after he received a skillful backheel pass from Edin Dzeko, notes Eurosport.com. Newcastle committed players forward early in the second half, but never managed to cause too much trouble, as they failed to get a single shot on goal against Joe Hart.

With Newcastle desperately seeking an equalizer in the closing minutes of the match, Agüero was able to find some space and double City's score in stoppage time. It did not always look pretty for City according to The Guardian, but no team will ever complain after taking all three points in an away game.

City got their title defense off to the prefect start, but we will have to wait to see how Chelsea looks when they take in Burnley tomorrow before we know who has the sharpest squad early in the season.
