What would have happened if Nicolas Winding Refn cast Matthew McConaughey in Drive instead of Ryan Gosling? Well, Lincoln’s new car campaign answers that question.

Lincoln recruited the Oscar winner, who once made a movie called The Lincoln Lawyer, for a two-year campaign. According to Variety, the commercials will be directed by Winding Refn and the campaign starts this week.

Forbes reports that McConaughey will “act as a storyteller” for the TV and digital campaigns for the MKC SUV. It is clear that the actor was brought in to help sell the brand to a younger demographic, since Ford reinvented the brand two years ago.

“I like where they are heading with their transformation,” McConaughey said in a statement. He “had the chance to drive the new MKC around Texas and I think they’re doing a good job.”

In the first commercial itself, which was posted on Instagram, the actor says, “Lincoln’s a classic, iconic American brand that’s now making the transformation into the luxury market, and after driving the MKC I think they’re doing a good job of that.”

McConaughey has successfully revived his career with True Detective and his Oscar winning turn in Dallas Buyers Club last year. His next big project is Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, which opens in November. Clearly, we’re in the middle of a McConaughey renaissance, but Lincoln didn’t hire him for his talents as a lawyer.
