The Miami Marlins placed dominant right-hander Henderson Alvarez on the 15-day disabled list on Friday due to inflammation in his right shoulder. The move was retroactive to Wednesday.
Alvarez, 24, has been one of the best pitchers in the National League this season. He leads the league with three complete game shutouts in 22 starts according to NBC Sports. Alvarez trails only Clayton Kershaw, Adam Wainwright and Jonny Cueto in ERA with an impressive 2.48.
Alvarez was scheduled to start Sunday against the Cincinnati Reds. Jacob Turner will start against the Reds in place of Alvarez. The Marlins have recalled left-hander Dan Jennings from Triple-A New Orleans according to ESPN.
Alvarez was named to his first ever All-Star team this year. He has been an ace for the Marlins injured rotation, posting an 8-5 record.
The Marlins recently acquired right-handed starting pitcher Jarred Cosart from the Houston Astros on Thursday before the non-waiver trade deadline. Cosart and his high velocity fastball will make his team debut Friday against the Reds.
