The Philadelphia Flyers roster has gone through a fair amount of change over the past few days.
First the team announced that defenseman Kimmo Timonen has been hospitalized with blood clots in both his right leg and lungs.
With Timonen’s condition uncertain for the upcoming season, the Philadelphia Flyers went ahead and signed 24-year-old defenseman Michael Del Zotto.
Del Zotto signed a one-year, $1.3 million contract, reports Yahoo Sports.
This past season, Del Zotto played for both the New York Rangers and the Nashville Predators. In 42 games with the Rangers, he posted two goals and nine assists. In the final 25 contests of the year, he amassed one goal and four assists as a member of the Predators, according to NHL.com.
Timonen, who has played 15 seasons in the NHL, tallied six goals and 29 assists in 77 games last season with the Flyers. He is currently being treated in Finland (his home country), reports USA Today.
"This could be a long-term thing and we have to prepare as an organization as if it is a long-term thing," general manager Ron Hextall said. "Can he play at some point next season? I don't have the answer to that.
"First and foremost, we're worried about Kimmo Timonen the person, not Kimmo Timonen the hockey player."
