Miley Cyrus’ date’s mother says she is “proud” of her son, claims that people should be focusing on the good he is bringing to the world rather than his troubled past.

Although the “Wrecking Ball” singer has had a lot of positive press because of her selfless act at MTV’s Video Music Awards, many were surprised to learn that her date, Jesse Helt, has an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

However, Helt’s mother, Linda Helt, recently spoke with ABC News, saying, "I'm proud of him for [raising awareness at the VMAs], that he stood up and made a difference.”

Helt later mentioned Jesse’s troubled past, admitting he had lived in shelters all over Los Angeles and needed that experience to be where he is today.

"He wanted to make it on his own, number one,” she added. “He wanted to be responsible for his actions. I think he needed to grow up. I hope that this can be the start of a national conversation about youth homelessness and how to end it."

Cyrus also spoke out in Jesses’ defense on Twitter, adding that she is upset the media is focusing on his troubled past and not bringing light to the real problem, youth homelessness.

Cyrus found Helt through My Friend’s Place, a homeless youth shelter in Los Angeles.
