“Wrecking Ball” singer Miley Cyrus discusses her personal change between the 2013 and 2014 Video Music Awards, claiming she didn’t realize how much of an impact her actions made.

After the 2013 VMAs, everyone was talking about Cyrus’ performance of “Blurred Lines” with Robin Thicke, where she debuted her wiggling tongue and grinding on Thicke. However, the former Hannah Montana star has confessed that this year she wanted to draw attention to something that is more important than skimpy outfits and twerking.

"I just didn't realize my platform, I didn't realize my power," Cyrus said On Air with Ryan Seacrest. "And I think I really realized it after the VMAs [last year]…there's something special and there's only few people that experience this that no matter what I do, there's no winning or losing, it's just going to be talked about. Period."

She later revealed she now realizes everything she does will be talked about, adding, "If I'm going to be given this loud of a voice and this big of an image and this big of a platform and this huge of an opportunity to talk to young people in America right now, what am I really trying to say? Because I don't think what I was trying to say is what happened the year before."

Cyrus concluded by admitting she wants to raise awareness on more serious issues, adding that after last year she wants people “to remember what matters.”

According to E! News, the “Wrecking Ball” singer took home the VMA for Video of the Year, but allowed her date, a 21-year-old male from a youth homeless shelter, My Friend’s Place, to accept the award on her behalf.
