The Milwaukee Brewers have placed right-handed starting pitcher Matt Garza on the 15-day disabled list with a strained oblique muscle suffered against St. Louis on Monday.
Garza pitched six shutout innings in 71 pitches, allowing just one hit against the Cardinals according to NBC. After his 71st delivery, he was forced to exit the game and watch the Cardinas rally with three runs against the Brewers’ bullpen for a 3-2 loss.
"It was like, 'Son of a gun,'" Garza said. "You put a bullpen in that situation where everybody is caught off-guard. Your starter has 70 pitches, nobody assumes he's coming out."
Garza has pitched well in his first year with Milwaukee, posting a 3.58 ERA in 23 games. He has held opponents to a .226 batting average. This is the third consecutive season Garza has missed lengthy time with an injury. Garza pitched 104 innings in 2012 and 155 innings in 2013. Garza has pitched 146 innings this season, with a 104/43 strikeout to walk ratio.
The Brewers recalled reliever Rob Wooten from Triple-A Nashville, but was not named as Garza’s replacement according to MLB. Marco Estrada, who was moved to the bullpen after 18 starts with the Brewers, is also a possible candidate for Garza’s spot in the rotation.
