Emerald City will not be debuting on NBC after all, despite the network previously giving the Wizard of Oz-themed drama a straight-to-series pickup.
NBC originally put in a 10-episode order for the series, which was set to be based off the many stories set in the Wizard of Oz world by L. Frank Baum, Deadline reports. The vision for the series was meant to be akin to HBO's immensely popular series Game of Thrones.
It would deal with 20-year-old Dorothy Gale finding herself in the center of a violent fight for Oz, and would feature warriors and kingdoms competing for power.
Alas, NBC executives and the writers room could not get on the same page when it came to a vision for the series, even with additional scripts put together. So the network decided to call it a day with the Matthew Arnold executive produced and conceived project.
The series might not be completely dead though, as Universal Television is said to still be interested and might try to shop the project to other networks.
Emerald City is the second straight-to-series commitment to eventually be dropped by a major network ahead of the fall season. Fox decided to cancel work on Hieroglyph back in early July after coming away unhappy with the scripts and ending another of former chief Kevin Reilly's projects.
While no casting was done yet on Emerald City, Hieroglyph was far enough along in production that a pilot had already been shot.
