Suddenly, the networks are learning that people do watch primetime scripted television during the summer. NBC has just renewed Undateable, the new sitcom from Cougar Town co-creator Bill Lawrence. It is the second scripted show of the summer from the peacock network to get a second season.
The news was first confirmed on Twitter by one of the show’s stars, Chris D’Elia. “Here to report - Undateable season 2 is a GO. Operation: Chris buys a spaceship is coming to fruition.” he wrote.
Lawrence added that he is “Overexcited to do 2nd season of a Undateable on NBC.”
Undateable was a show NBC had once planned to air during midseason, but decided to burn off the produced episodes during the summer. Surprisingly, people actually tuned in to the multi-camera sitcom. According to TVLine, the premiere drew 3.8 million viewers and a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic, the best summer launch for a broadcast comedy in five years.
As we previously reported, NBC has also renews the medical drama The Night Shift for a second season. That show earned 6.7 million viewers and a 1.6 key demo rating for its premiere.
In the past couple of years, the networks have tried to get viewers more interested in scripted summer programming, especially CBS, which saw Under The Dome become a hit in 2013. Perhaps NBC will jump in now that this summer has been successful. The peacock network also launched Welcome to Sweden and Meet the Engels this summer.
D’Elia previously starred in NBC’s Whitney with Whitney Cummings, which lasted two seasons.
