The University of Notre Dame head football coach Brian Kelly named Everett Golson the starting quarterback for the 2014 college football season.

Golson a redshirt junior was academically suspended all of last year from the school after cheating on an assignment, according to Sports Illustrated.

Golson beat out redshirt freshman Malik Zaire for the position, according to ESPN.

Kelly told reporters that he made his decision based on how the two quarterbacks performed from January to until now.

“So winter workouts, how he handled himself with the team workouts, his spring practice then his leadership in the summer and then camp here, I think he’s put himself in a position to get that opportunity to be our starter against Rice,” he said.

As a redshirt freshman in 2012, Golson became the starter and started 11 games. Helping Notre Dame to the national title game against Alabama. He threw for 2,405 yards and 12 touchdowns, while rushing for 298 yards and six rushing TDs.

When coach Kelly told the two quarterbacks he said he got the right response from both players. Zaire was unhappy with the decision and Golson had almost no reaction to the news.
