Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly revealed Wednesday that quarterback Everett Golson, who served a suspension last fall semester for cheating on a test, earned back the starting quarterback job over redshirt freshman Malik Zaire.

“It’s a heightened responsibility on my part now that everything’s set for Week 1. It’s my job to get these guys right on offense and try to lead this team,” Golson said.
In his 2012 campaign, Golson threw for 2,405 yards and 12 touchdowns according to Yahoo Sports, and also ran for six scores. Golson was suspended last May for violating the honor code.
Kelly made it clear that Golson would have to compete for the starting job when he returned to the team after serving his suspension, and that he would not employ a two quarterback system.
Golson’s last game under center for the Irish was the 2013 BCS National Championship Game. Notre Dame lost to Nick Saban and Alabama 42-14.
Notre Dame enters the year as the number 17 team in the country. The team has tough games against Michigan, Stanford, North Carolina and Florida State.
