The Arizona Diamondbacks have placed All-Star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured left hand, ending his 2014 season.

Goldschmidt’s fracture is non-displaced meaning surgery is out of the question, but rushing back could risk displacing it and leading to surgery according to USA Today.

"Realistically," Manager Kirk Gibson said, "it's eight weeks, so he's done."

A pitch hit Goldschmidt Saturday by Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Ernesto Frieri. While the Diamondbacks have had a lack luster season, Goldschmidt was a shining star for the last place Diamondbacks.

Goldschmidt leads the league in doubles and extra base hits according to ESPN. He also is tied for first in the league in runs scored, second in total bases and third in both RBI and walks.

Goldschmidt is batting .300 with 19 home runs this year. He has 75 runs scored and drawn 64 walks. Last year Goldschmidt was a gold glover and runner-up in National League MVP voting.

Arizona has recalled outfielder Alfredo Marte from Triple-A Reno to fill in for Goldschmidt.
