Earlier this week, it was rumored that Jenna Coleman is leaving Doctor Who. However, the newest Doctor, Peter Capaldi, has denied that, saying that he’s not looking for a new companion.
As we previously reported, British tabloids claimed that Coleman, who has been on the show since 2012 and plays Clara, would be leaving after the upcoming Christmas Special.
“The conversations about Jenna's exit have started and a plan is in place which is being ironed out,” a source told the Mirror. The source explained that, while she has been great on the show, produced beleive that it is time for a change.
That’s very different from what Capaldi told The One Show, reports Metro.
“I’m not looking for a new assistant…I don’t know where these rumours have started,” Capaldi told the show’s hosts. “I’ve read she may be leaving at Christmas but I don’t even know if she’ll get to Christmas, you’ll have to watch it and see what happens.”
While Capaldi may have just confused fans even more, he had nothing but kind words to say about her performances. “She’s been called upon to do things that I don’t think any other companion has had to do, to show a kind of emotional range and I think she’s done it absolutely brilliantly,” Capaldi said.
Doctor Who season eight premieres on BBC America Saturday night at 8 p.m.
