The Boston Red Sox will lose outfielder Shane Victorino after he opted to undergo lower back surgery.
Victorino has spent the majority of the year on the disabled list, playing in just 30 games this season, according to MLB.com.
He latest stint on the DL started on Friday after he had an MRI that showed he should undergo the surgery.
Victorino told MLB.com that he doesn’t mind playing through pain or an injury. This time, however, it was starting to worry him.
“The other night when I felt it, it was something that kind of woke me up a little bit," he said. "It was kind of sharp and sudden when it happened and we obviously found out why, with what the MRI revealed."
According to the Boston Herald, the Red Sox think Victorino will be healthy by spring training.
Victorino has one more season left on a three-year, $39 million contract.
In the games that he did play this year, Victorino batted .268 with two home runs and six doubles.
