Robert Redford sues New York over $1.6 million Sundance Channel tax bill

Robert Redford has filed a lawsuit against the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance to prevent the collection of $1.57 million in taxes.

The state treated the sale of his portion of the Sundance Channel as New York income, when the actor says he already paid taxes in Utah, where he is a resident, TheWrap reports.

The All the President's Men star was hit with a bill for $845,000 in taxes and $723,000 in interest over the 2005 sale.

"[Redford's Sundance T.V. Inc] and Plaintiff determined that the gain was non-New York source income and reported it as such [on] their New York State tax returns," the complaint, filed in the state Supreme Court, says.

He sold 20 percent of his stake in 2005 and then in 2008 sold off the rest, which the state is apparently not seeking income taxes from, according to Reuters.

Redford contends he did nothing wrong and is looking for a judgment in his favor and for the state to pay his attorney's fees and costs.
