Among a leaderboard littered with the best golfers in the world, Rory McIlroy asserted his dominance by winning the 96th PGA Championship at Valhalla in thrilling fashion. The win was his second major of the year, his third tournament won in a row, and his fourth major of his career.
McIlroy came in to Sunday with a one-stroke lead and in the final pairing of the day. Birdies fell throughout the day, but not on the front nine for McIlroy who was three shots back walking to the 10th tee box. McIlroy changed his outlook with a phenominal 3-wood from 281 yards out that he shot within 7 feet of the pin for eagle on the 10th hole according to Fox Sports.
McIlroy caught up to Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler and Henrik Stenson who all had a share of the lead on the back nine. McIlroy closed the round with a par for a 3-under par 68 to be Michelson by a stroke just before the darkness almost spoiled the day.
McIlroy becomes the fifth player to win four majors at the age of 25 or younger joining Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Old Tom Morris and Bobby Jones according to Breitbart.
Stenson and Fowler finished tied for third, while Mickelson finished second for his first top 10 finish this season.
When asked how good McIlroy is, Mickelson answered, “Better than everyone else right now.”
