The San Francisco Giants will lose pitcher Matt Cain for the rest of the season after he decided to undergo surgery to remove bone chips from his right elbow.
According to MLB.com, Cain’s recovery could take three months, but the actual timeframe is unknown.
Cain met with several orthopedist’s prior to making the decision, including the Giants Dr. Jen Akizuki, Mets Dr. David Altchek and Dr. James Andrews, who all told him to have surgery.
Giants manager Bruce Bochy told The Splash that the surgery had to happen.
“It’s been frustrating for Matt,” Bochy said. “ He’s been battling this for a while. It’s time. He could have kept trying to push it. But it was inevitable. He’s going to have this done and be ready for spring training.”
Can has been known as a durable pitcher after he reached 200 innings pitched in each season from 2007-2012 and at least 180 innings and 30 starts since his first full big league season in 2006. However, this year Cain went just 2-7 in 15 starts with a 4.18 ERA.
According to Sports Illustrated, Cain has been on the disabled list since July 21 with elbow soreness.
