Sergio Garcia had a record day Friday on the way to the top of the leaderboard at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. Garcia shot a second round 61, including 27 on the back nine.
Garcia tied the 18-hole tournament record previously shot by Tiger Woods in 2000 and 2013, and broke the nine-hole record by two strokes according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Garcia leads Justin Rose by three strokes.
Garcia called it a “dream back nine.” Garcia birdied every hole on the back nine except for number 11, missing from 15 feet off the green. Garcia’s seven birdies in a row is a new career mark for him.
Rory McIlroy and Marc Leishman are tied for third at seven-under par. Rickie Fowler and Charl Schwartzel both sit at six-under par going into the weekend. Tiger Woods sits 10 shots behind the leader after a second round 71 according to USA Today.
Garcia will look to capture his first World Golf Championship on Saturday as the players will tee off early due to inclement weather in the forecast.
