Sopranos creator David Chase has revealed the answer to the question that has been burning within fans since the hit HBO show ended its run seven years ago: Did Tony Soprano die?
He didn’t give it up without a fight, although it’s shocking that he revealed the answer at all. He has previously described the ending, which simply features the screen going black, "was meant to make you feel, not to make you think."
In a feature published Wednesday on Vox, journalist Martha P. Nochimson claims Chase told her that Tony did not die in the finale.
"Why are we talking about this?" he angrily asked her when she brought up the question of whether or not Tony is dead in a coffee shop. He then replied, "No, he isn't."
Fans were outraged with the ending, which featured Tony sitting in a diner with his family. Tony looks up when someone walks through the door and the series just ends right there. Viewers were left to decide if he was killed, arrested, or if his life just went on as usual from there, Today.com reports.
The only explanation Chase has is the ending is based on Poe's poem "Dream Within a Dream." He lamented, "What more can I say?"
James Gandolfini, the actor who played Tony Soprano, died at the age of 51 in June 2013.
