The movie that earned $65 million on its opening weekend is now set to have a sequel. Expect Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 in the summer of 2016!
According to Entertainment Weekly, Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies announced on Sunday that they plan to have a sequel called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 on June 3, 2016. Michael Bay is to return with his partners from Platinum Dunes and produce the film. The Turtles writing team Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec are to write a script to the sequel and become executive producers. There's still no announcement whether Jonathan Liebesman is going to return and direct the movie.
According to Brad Grey, CEO and chairman of Paramount Pictures, “To know moviegoers are embracing the Turtles with such enthusiasm is everything that we and all our filmmakers have been hoping for. We are thrilled with this weekend’s result, the enduring power of this franchise, and the opportunity to make another one.”
HITFIX noted that the Paramount Pictures film was expected to have an opening between $45-50 million, however, the film opened with a broader audience than expected and earned $65 million within 3 days. It seems like the Michael Bay produced adventure did better than expected. The film is predicted to hit between $150-170 domestic global returns to combat the movie’s $125 million budget.
