The Detroit Tigers have received a lot of attention recently with their star-studded pitching rotation. However, that exceptional group of five pitchers took a hit on Friday night as Anibal Sanchez left the Tigers game at the Toronto Blue Jays in the fifth with a right pectoral strain.
Detroit went on to win the game 5-4 with a ninth-inning comeback.
Sanchez, who will return to Detroit on Saturday to get an MRI, sustained the injury while doing a routine throw over to first base. But, immediately after tossing the ball, be began to stretch his arm out to relieve the tension that built up in it.
After manager Brad Ausmus and head athletic trainer Kevin Rand came to the mound, Sanchez attempted to throw a warmup pitch but knew that there was no way he could throw another pitch, reports MLB.com
"It's an odd area to have an injury in baseball," Ausmus said. "It's not something that's common. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. When you have a hamstring injury or a groin injury, there's kind of some track record for recovery time based on how severe the injury is."
Earlier this season, Sanchez was on the disabled list for three weeks with a lacerated finger on his right hand. Sanchez allowed four runs in the first two innings and left the game with the Tigers trailing 4-2.
Detroit’s Nick Castellanos and Eugenio Suarez smacked back-to-back home runs in the top of the ninth to give the Tigers the victory in the series opener, according to USA Today.
