The Colorado Rockies rough season got worse on Wednesday. All-star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki will reportedly undergo surgery on a torn labrum in his left hip on Friday, meaning he will miss the remainder of the 2014 season.
Tulowitzki visited with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Marc Philippon on Wednesday according to MLB.com. He hasn’t played since July 19 after he was originally placed on the 15-day disabled list for a strained left hip flexor.
Tulowitzki, who hit the disabled list twice this season, has missed 91 games this season due to injury. He hasn’t played in more than 125 games since 2011.
Tulowitzki currently leads the National League with a .340 batting average. He also has 21 home runs and 52 RBIs this season, and his 5.7 wins above replacement rate kept the Rockies from avoiding the cellar of the MLB for a time. Since his injury Colorado has fell to the worst league in baseball at 46-74 this season.
Colorado Rockies head trainer Keith Dugger told the Denver Post that Tulowitzki’s recovery time is expected to be around five months.
