Viewers turned out to say farewell to HBO's vampire drama True Blood on Sunday night, helping the nine-season long series close out to a season high in the ratings.
The premiere telecast of the series finale drew 4 million viewers, which was a season high and almost on par with season eight's finale last summer, according to The Hollywood Reporter. On a night filled with competition due to the MTV Video Music Awards and the third week of preseason football, a total of 4.5 million viewers combined to watch both telecasts of True Blood.
The ninth season has been averaging 9.4 million viewers across all platforms each week, which is a slide from when the show was in its heyday several years ago. True Blood averaged 13 million viewers back in 2010.

Freshman drama The Leftovers saw a boost from its concluding lead-in to hit a series ratings high of 1.9 million viewers, Deadline reports.
Over on sister network Cinemax, the numbers for Steven Soderbergh's The Knick just continue to grow, improving 15 percent upon the premiere episode to 754,000 viewers. That's a nice increase from the second episode, which drew 600,000 viewers. The early renewal is looking more and more like the right call.
