Halfway through the 66th Primetime Emmys last night, host Seth Meyers brought on ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic on the stage for a humorous bit. The parodist put lyrics to some wordless TV theme songs that explained what happens in the show.
During the medley, Weird Al paid tribute to ABC’s Scandal, Showtime’s Homeland and then an epic version of the Game of Thrones theme. He urged author George R.R. Martin to finish the books and even had him sent a typewriter.
In an interview with Vulture, Weird Al said that he did plan a True Detective song, but it had to be cut due to time constraints.
“We had a whole True Detective theme we cut two days ago,” he revealed. “We had a Downton Abbey song that didn’t make it through the first draft. The Homeland one was longer, but we had to trim it down for time.”
Weird Al said that he was approached by Meyers to do the bit on Twitter, since Meyers didn’t have his phone number. He explained that he only had two and a half weeks at the most to put the sequence together.
Meyers “called me and pitched me the whole idea about the TV theme-songs,” Weird Al recalled. “I was like, ‘Yeah, that sounds great, absolutely! We’ll cut the vacation short and come back.’”
Weird Al has been in the news this summer since he released his new album Mandatory Fun. It became the first Billboard No. 1 album of his long career.
