New York Yankees center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury missed Saturday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays due to a sprained left ankle.
Ellsbury suffered the injury during Friday’s game against the Blue Jays. During the ninth inning Ellsbury slid into Blue Jays catcher Dioner Navarro while trying to score a run. Mike Everitt, the home plate umpire, called Ellsbury safe, however the call was overturned on a review. Ellsbury stayed in the game and the x-rays that were taken after the game came back negative, according to the Associated Press.
"I think I caught my foot on [Jays catcher Dioner Navarro]'s shin guard and twisted it up,'' Ellsbury said. “My foot got caught up and it bent, not allowing me to touch home plate.''
There are no further tests planned for Ellsbury at this time. Yankees manager Joe Girardi doesn’t know when Ellsbury will be able to play again.
"My hope is that it's not a long-term thing," Girardi said. "Adrenaline can carry you a long way. The fact that he wants to try makes me feel better."
Girardi went on to add the Ellsbury wants to play and that they will see what he can do.
Ellsbury is the Yankees hottest hitter right now.On Friday he went 2 for 5 with a two-run homerun. He has 11 hits, including four homeruns, in the Yankees current road trip, and is hitting .455 over the last 11 games, according to ESPN. He leads the Yankees with 64 RBIs. Overall Ellsbury is hitting .286 with 14 homeruns along with those 64 RBIs.
Brett Gardner played in center on Saturday. He will probably play on Sunday as well. The Yankees have off on Monday before starting a six-game homestand on Tuesday.
