We now know who two of the male leads are going to be in True Detective’s second season, but who are the female stars? That remains a mystery.
The first actress who was linked to the project was Jessica Chastain, but sadly, she isn’t going to be in it. Chastain is just too busy and could be back on the awards circuit this fall thanks to A Most Violent Year and The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby.
Next up, we heard about Elisabeth Moss last month. She was being considered and would be a bit of a departure from the series’ typical casting decisions. Moss is an established TV star thanks to the already completed Mad Men and won acclaim for Top of the Lake. She also recently starred in the feature The One I Love.
Michelle Forbes from The Killing, another show that has ended, was also linked to the project at the time Moss was.
Earlier this month, Rachel McAdams suddenly entered the picture. She certainly doesn’t need a career lifesaver like Colin Carrell and Vince Vaughn do, so this is an intriguing choice. It would truly be a change of pace for McAdams and one we welcome.
When Tuesday’s news came, Deadline threw out not one, not two, not three - but nine potential women for the show. Rosario Dawson, Kelly Reilly, Jessica Biel, Malin Akerman, Abigail Spencer, Oona Chaplin, Jaimie Alexander and Brit Marling were all invited to read for creator/writer Nic Pizzolatto, the site reports. Keira Knightley is also being mentioned. McAdams is still in play, but a movie commitment may keep her from doing it.
So, here’s what we definitely know so far:
Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn are definitely starring. Farrell will play detective Ray Velcoro and Vaughn got the part as reformed criminal Frank Semyon.
There will be three detectives, including Farrell’s character.
It is set in California and (shocker) there’s a murder.
Justin Lin, who worked on the Fast & Furious movies, is only directing at least the first two episodes.
It’s only going to be eight episodes.
Filming will take place this fall.
Finally, we are incredibly excited.
