Broadway executives didn't plan on dimming lights to honor the late Joan Rivers just a day ago, but reversed their decision on Tuesday.
The Broadway League said on Monday that theater lights would not be dimmed as the legendary comedienne did not meet required criteria for the honor, The Associated Press reports.
Unsurprisingly there was backlash from the decision and some theater owners said they planned to dim the lights on Tuesday regardless. So the league, who represent owners and producers, decided to honor Rivers after all.
"Joan Rivers loved Broadway and we loved her," executive director Charlotte St. Martin said in a statement. "Due to the outpouring of love and respect for Joan Rivers from our community and from her friends and fans worldwide, the marquees of Broadway theatres in New York will be dimmed in her memory tonight."
Rivers only had a few Broadway appearances, including Neil Simon's Broadway Bound, but she did snag a Tony Award nomination in 1994 for Sally Marr ... and Her Escorts.
The Fashion Police host passed away on Thursday, Sept. 4 after being placed in a medically induced coma for about a week. She had visited a New York clinic for throat surgery and stopped breathing. No official cause of death has been released.
