In the television industry, new times call for new faces. The fresh face takes over and the old, well, they feel repetitive to the TV audience in the hurry. Debra Messing (Will and Grace, Smash) is the exception to the rule as she’s back and better than ever.

Her new show, The Mysteries of Laura, premiered last week and gave us a peak into the edgy, take no-prisoners life of NYPD Detective Laura Diamond. Laura balances her two sides of mom and dangerous career while enjoying the ride every step of the way. Early reaction has come back strong and it looks as though the viewing audience wants more Debra Messing.

Much like Laura, Messing has her own roles to fill of mom and successful actress. It’s not hard to find the eerily similarities between the two women.

TheCelebrityCafe.com's Robby Sabo recently had a chance to speak with Debra about her new show and other interesting topics.

Robby Sabo: Well we all know by now, your new show The Mysteries of Laura premiered last week and it’s now two episodes in. Can you talk a little about the feeling around the set of the show?
Debra Messing: Everyone on the set is just thrilled and overjoyed. We all knew that the idea was something that was a little outside the box for network television. It is something that people would have to wrap their heads around as a “who done it” mystery while having the comedic element there as well. All along we’ve been really enjoying those polar opposite elements and the balance of the part. So, to find out that 20 million people tuned in for the pilot and that the second episode notched the highest number in five years for that time slot is very gratifying. I’m very happy to hear people are giving it a chance and are enjoying it, and we’re having fun doing it.

RS: There seems to be so many similarities between you and the character of Laura. You’re also a mother while working a successful career; you’re also from New York. How do you feel you relate to Laura?
DM: I think is the reason why I really wanted to do this. I did relate to her even though her career is so specialized. Being a working, single mother myself, it makes for a very strong connection. Nowadays, most moms are working moms, and it’s a very common thing you know. I related to the passion that she has for her career, and the pride that she takes in the way she does it, and her desire to be everything that a mother can and should be for her kids. So for me, I felt like I can dig into it and understand something fundamental about her. I love the comedic elements and love the fact that we’re in New York instead of Los Angeles, as that was a big plus for me after going to school here. Being able to shoot outside, in Central Park is also fantastic.

RS: You have teamed up with Zyrtec again this fall. Can you give me a little bit about what you and Zyrtec are doing right now?
DM: Well, most know that I’ve always suffered from severe allergies, and now that I discovered Zyrtec a couple years ago, I can shoot outside, in Central Park for instance with no issues. I take one in the morning and I’m covered for 24 hours. I don’t have to worry about my throat closing up and my eyes getting red anymore. Spreading the message to allergy sufferers that there is a solution out there is what we are focused on. It was a game changer for me as nothing previously ever worked consistently. This was a very organic and natural partnership especially being a mom and wanting to go to outside, and go to baseball games, and sit on the grass.

RS: Much like yourself, your new co-star Josh Lucas is an incredible actor. How has it been working with him?
DM: It’s been fantastic. Josh is an incredibly talented actor. He is funny, smart and an incredibly sweet person who is a single parent like myself so we really have a lot in common. We talk about those things in common such as our kids, and going through a divorce. Needless to say, it’s been a joy working with him as I’ve been such a huge fan of his forever. I’m thrilled on how it’s worked out.

RS: You have an Emmy, and you’ve been nominated 6 times. You seem to excel in television…what keeps you going strong these days?
DM: For me it’s always the script. It’s been the script since day one for me. I think that what excites me is playing a character that lives in a world that is provocative. You know, Grace Adler had the gay best friend which was a wonderfully dangerous role to play in. The idea behind Smash had never been explored before on television. That was another role that had not been explored before. I’ve been somewhat of a murder-mystery junky. Shows like 48 Hours and many things on TruTV have always peaked my interest. Since I love comedy as well, the marriage of the two seemed so unusual and wonderful to me.

RS: You are so beloved for your role as Grace Adler. Have you ever found yourself watching Will and Grace on a late night when there’s little to do?
DM: You know I don’t because I’m at work all the time and when I’m home at night I’m usually getting ready for the next day. However my 10 year old son has just discovered it. So on a weekend during the day, I’ll sit with him and watch it. I just really get a kick out of watching him laugh at the comedy. He was born during the early days so it’s wonderful thing to have him rediscover it. The memories associated there are amazing.
