In Week 1 of the 2014 season opener, the New York Jets defeated the Oakland Raiders by a final score of 19-14. Actually, the score was a whole lot closer than the large discrepancy between the play of both teams.

Rex Ryan’s defense was dominant all day against rookie QB Derrick Carr and his offense. Gang Green’s defense only surrendered a total of 158 yards on the day. Ryan though was far from pleased following the team’s win as penalties and turnovers plagued them all day.

''This game should've been a rat kill, it wasn't,” said Ryan following the game, according to CBSSports.com.

“Our fans were better than our team today. We never had any takeaways and had two turnovers, so that's obviously a work in progress. It has to get better for us to do what we want to do.''

The Jets were an undisciplined team as they committed 11 penalties for a whopping 105 yards. This in comparison to Oakland’s four made a game of it. Highlighted was three-holding calls that destroyed field position in the first quarter.

No matter though, as the Jets fought through their own self-inflicting wounds.

Little by little, RB’s Chris Johnson, Chris Ivory and the offensive line wore down the Raiders front seven. Popping off four and five yard runs each carry led to a 71-yard TD burst by Ivory in the fourth quarter which broke the game open and put the Jets on top 19-7, according to NYDailyNews.

Ivory finished the game with 102 yards on 10 carries while Johnson went for 68 on 13 attempts. Johnson did however score on a beautifully executed shovel pass in the second quarter which gave the Jets the lead that they held for the remainder of the game.

For the Raiders, their running game with Maurice Jones-Drew could never get established all game and it put extra pressure on the young QB. Carr finished with 151 yards and 2 TD’s including one to James Jones late in the fourth which made the score a little closer.

Aside from two early turnovers (1 Interception, 1 Fumble), Jets QB Geno Smith was very efficient as he went for 221 yards and a TD on a very nice 23 of 28 passing.

With the Patriots losing to the Dolphins today and the Bills shockingly defeated the Bears, only the Patriots are 0-1 in the AFC East.
