Katie Couric shared with her fans on Thursday some sad news. Her mother, Elinor, died at age 91.

Couric posted a posted the same picture of Elinor on Facebook and Twitter, showing her mother smiling on June 21.

“My heart is broken. I lost my mom and best friend. We love you and miss you, Mom/Granny,” the former Today Show co-anchor wrote on Twitter. She added on Facebook, “She loved fiercely and was fiercely loved.”

Elinor is survived by Couric, Clara, Emily and John Jr.. She also had several grandchildren, including Couric’s two children, linor, 23, and Carrie, 18.

According to Us Weekly, Couric spoke with Women’s Day in 2012 about her mother, who lived in the Virginia home Couric and her siblings grew up in. Her husband, John Couric, died in 2011 after battling Parkinson’s disease.

“My mother's day-to-day care took on a new urgency after my father passed away last year,” Couric told the magazine. “Now Mom is living alone, in the same house in Virginia where we grew up…it's full of 55 years' worth of memories, and the thought of leaving it and the life she shared with my dad is understandably overwhelming.”

Although Couric’s short-lived daytime talk show Katie was cancelled, she remains busy at Yahoo. Couric married John Molner in the Hamptons in June.

Couric also takes part in Stand Up To Cancer, which airs tonight.
