Despite the fact that all of his movies push the buttons of what many may call appropriateness and good taste, provocative writer/director Lars von Trier is bringing his talents to the small screen, with the upcoming English language series The House That Jack Built.
According to Variety, the project was announced at a press conference—a rarity for von Trier to do these days—as the director was premiering Nymphomaniac: Volume II-Director's Cut at the Venice Film Festival. It was not Lars that announced it, but rather producer Louise Vesth, who will be making the show with her company, TrustNordisk.
The series will be developed by executive producer Piv Bernth, in association with Denmarks Radio. Peter Aalbæk Jensen, executive producer on the show, says that "it will be a TV series without precedent."
Writing for the show is expected to begin this fall, with von Trier penning the show in addition to directing it. No plot or cast members have been revealed at the moment. But the series is expecting to provide a high profile cast. Shooting is being prepared to start in 2016.
This is not the first foray for von Trier in television. Having co-directed the Danish mini-series The Kingdom mini-series with Morten Arnfred in 1994. This, however, will be the first time that he will be making a TV series in the English language.
von Trier made waves earlier this year with his two-part film series Nymphomaniac: Volume I and II. While he has his fair share of fans and haters, he continues to prove himself as an unprecedented auteur. What he will be bringing to the small screen at this point in his life is interesting, to say the least.
