The three Lincoln car commercials with Matthew McConaughey in front of the camera and Nicolas Winding Refn behind have dropped and only one could be really called weird and all are fairly simple affairs.
All three commercials are fairly quiet, with a simple piano tune playing in the background, placing focus both on the whispering True Detective actor and the vehicle, a 2015 MKC.
McConaughey speaks softly through the three commercials and seems to be channeling a little Rust Cohle in the first as he comes across a bull, which he calls "Ol' Cyrus" blocking his path. Slate suggests the commercial could be a sly reference to both True Detective and Dallas Buyers Club.
The first commercial doesn't even really mention the car at all, except to suggest that "tak[ing] the long way" might mean the SUV is comfortable enough for long rides since the bull in front of his vehicle is "1,800 pounds of 'do whatever the heck I want.'"
The other two commercials are more focused on the car, with the second simply featuring McConaughey driving along and discussing how he has "been driving a Lincoln since long before anybody paid me to drive one."
The final commercial features the actor still behind the wheel, this time at night musing on the idea of "Sometimes you gotta go back to actually move forward."
