Miley Cyrus got a lot of media attention for twerking at the MTV Video Music Awards last year, but the “Wrecking Ball” singer wants to know why Elvis Presley never got ridiculed for his dance moves.
On the Australian television show Sunday Night, during which she also discussed her relationship with her ex-fiance, Liam Hemsworth, Cyrus said Presley was twerking long before her.
She explained, "Elvis, he wasn't wearing the outfits I was wearing but he was coming out and he was doing like the OG twerking. Like, no one wants to admit that he was twerking, he was.”
She went on to talk about the “double standard,” saying the King of Rock n Roll was the “symbol of sex” but never received the public outcry that she did.
“No one would have ever called Elvis a sh-t because he wasn't a girl,” she said. “It's that double standard and I think I'm doing something for the double standard."
Rolling Stone reports Cyrus also talked directly to the parents who fear she’s setting a bad example for their children, saying she stands for “freedom.”
“Especially in this time where the energy of the world is shifting from male energy to female energy,” she said.
