The NFL is loaded with athletes who possess freakish talent. One of those exact guys is Houston Texans DE JJ Watt. Now Watt can add a freakishly loaded wallet to his arsenal as the Texans and JJ Watt have agreed to a contract extension.
The terms of the deal are six-years and $100 million, according to BlogChron.com. $51.876 of it is guaranteed money and $30.876 of it is guaranteed at the signing of his contract. The other $21 million becomes guaranteed after the 2016 season plays out.
This means he is now locked up in Houston for eight total years as he still has two years remaining on his rookie deal. It also makes him the highest paid defensive player in the league, as he surpassed what the Buffalo Bills handed out to DE Mario Williams two summers ago.
During one of his practices with Houston this August, Watt made clear to the media that it would mean a lot if they could work out a new deal before the beginning of the season.
"With the new (collective bargaining agreement), I think one of the goals was to make guys earn their pay," Watt said. "No more big paydays up front. ... When a team gives a contract after the third year, they're saying, 'We think you've earned this.' And so, I don't know if [the Texans] feel that way or not. But I sure hope I've put in all the work and I've put in everything I can do to hopefully earn it, according to , according to CBSSports.com.
Watt and the Texans are currently preparing for their 2014 opening game against Robert Griffin III and the Washington Redskins. For his career, the 25 year old Watt has 36.5 sacks in just three seasons.
