Boardwalk Empire returned to HBO on Sunday for the series' fifth and final season, while freshman drama The Leftovers bowed for the season.

Though Sunday Night Football drew monster viewing numbers, HBO managed to be unaffected and Boardwalk debuted to 2.4 million viewers with the premiere telecast, which is steady from last year, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

With three viewings of the Prohibition drama, the fifth season premiere managed 2.9 million viewers.

The Leftovers closed out its season run with a strong 1.5 million viewers on the evening, with the viewing number jumping to a combined 1.7 million after an encore. The freshman drama averaged 7.3 million viewers across all HBO platforms on a weekly basis during the first season.

The numbers for both HBO dramas managed to be solid despite Sunday Night Football returning to an 8.0rating and averaging about 20 million viewers.

Fox also have an overrun of football on the night, along with The OT, helping the network also perform strongly on the night.
