The New York Yankees honored the team’s soon-to-be-retired captain Derek Jeter on Sunday during a pregame ceremony.

WABC noted that before a game against the Kansas City Royals, the shortstop was honored on a day now known as “Derek Jeter Day.”

NBA-great Michael Jordan, Ironman Cal Ripken Jr., new MLB commissioner Rob Manfred and former teammates Paul O’Neill, Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera all took part in the festivities.

At the conclusion of the 45-minute ceremony, Jeter gave a speech in which he thanked the late George Steinbrenner, his family, friends and of course, his fans.

The 40-year-old played 20 seasons for the Bronx Bombers, was a 14-time All Star and won five World Series Championships. He was named the MVP of the All-Star Game and the World Series in 2000.

Jeter won five Gold Gloves and five Silver Slugger Awards and was the recipient of the Roberto Clemente Award in 2009. The future Hall of Famer was named the 11th captain of the team in 2003.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t all roses on “Derek Jeter Day" though, the Yanks lost 2-0 to the Royals.
