This has to be the strangest way for Bill Murray and Sofia Coppola to get together again. After working on Lost In Translation over a decade ago, they have finally found another project: a Christmas TV special.
While speaking with Variety, the legendary comedy star said that he will star in a Christmas special directed by Coppola. He will get to test his pipes again, just like he did for his new film, St. Vincent.
However, don’t expect this to be a silly live NBC holiday special.
“It’s not going to be live,” Murray told Variety. “We’re going to do it like a little movie. It won’t have a format, but it’s going to have music. It will have texture. It will have threads through it that are writing. There will be prose.”
Variety also checked in with Coppola to make sure Murray wasn’t just joking (which he is known to do, after all). She did confirm that it is in the works.
“Not sure when it will air, but my motivation is to hear him singing my song requests,” Coppola said.
In St. Vincent, Murray can be heard singing along to Bob Dylan’s “Shelter from the Storm.” Earlier this month, The Weinstein Company posted the scene on YouTube to support the movie. St. Vincent opened in limited theaters this past weekend.
