Los Angeles has been without an NFL franchise for two decades, but the second biggest media market in the country could finally be getting one within one or two years.
While there always seems to be talk about moving a franchise to LA, NBC Sports’ report on Sunday added fuel to the fire. A league source told the site that an NFL franchise could be back there within 12 to 24 months and the franchises will be very familiar to LA football fans.
The Oakland Raiders and St. Louis Rams franchises both left LA in 1994, but could be back. The third potential franchise to move would be the San Diego Chargers, who actually played one season in LA back in 1960.
The league still has to find the best venue for a franchise and it was reported on Tuesday that Dodger Stadium is in play. The Los Angeles Times’ Sam Farmer tweeted, “An interesting wrinkle in the meandering NFL-to-LA odyssey: Dodger Stadium is in play as a potential temporary venue.”
Other possible venues include the Rose Bowl and the L.A. Coliseum while a new venue is built or AEG’s new L.A. Live project. According to CBS Sports, Rams owner Stan Kroenke did buy 60 acres of land in the city in January.
