Shailene Woodley has sex scenes with co-star Shiloh Fernandez in her upcoming film White Bird in a Blizzard, including one where her character has sex for the first time, and she’s opening up about the uncomfortable experience in a new interview.

Although Woodley called it “awkward,” Fernandez called it “fun.”

She told the New York Post’s Page Six, “It’s always an awkward situation when you have to pretend to be intimate with someone that you’re not actually intimate with,” adding, “I think the awkwardness probably lends itself to these great virginity scenes.”

However, Fernandez said shooting the intimate scenes with Woodley was “sort of fun” because they were able to “dive into this and just laugh at the whole silliness of not having anything sexual happen.”

He also explained the process of the sex scenes, saying they had to “wear these pads on your private areas.”

Meanwhile, Woodley talked to The Hollywood Reporter about losing her virginity on-screen, saying she’s a “pro at it” because she’s done it four times now.

She said she wanted to portray it authentically, which is “messy and real.”
“It's not glamorous — for some people, I think it is, but it wasn’t for a lot of people on this planet — so for me, it was a matter of, if we're gonna do a scene that deals with that, it's not gonna be, 'Her back arches and she gasps in excitement.'”
