My sincerest apologies for the recap of the season premiere of The Millers being a week late due to misreading the premiere date. However, we are now ready to bring you up to speed on what has been going on with our family in the episode “Movin’ Out (Carol’s song).”

Carol and Nathan are apartment hunting for Carol, who has been living with Nathan since moving out of the house. However, Nathan is uncomfortable at the particular apartment she is looking at, which has glass doors and would prevent her from watching Wheel of Fortune with her pants undone. While Carol loves the house, it’s too pricey and after stealing some tiny water bottles, we see the reason Nathan was hesitant on the apartment is because it’s right across the hall from his.

Debbie and Nathan are at the house with Carol where she tells her daughter that Nathan convinced her not to get the apartment across the hall. Debbie wonders how close the building came to being burnt down. Carol gets a list Nathan printed out of homes that were available. Mikayla comes in, on her way to spend a weekend with her friend’s rich family. Carol goes out with her to find out why the dad’s mall doesn’t have a particular store.

Meanwhile, Debbie realizes the places that Nathan listed are in their neighborhood and Nathan tells her he already did his time and it’s her turn, but she quips that she has dad. Apparently he has been bringing home a lady friend to the house every evening, and soon, he comes down with a woman whose name might be Kathy.

Nathan’s dad tells them about the woman, who lives at Shrugging Pines, a retirement community that has private apartments, three craft rooms, and 42 things of pipe cleaner. Nathan suggests they check it out for Carol, especially since it’s only four blocks from Debbie’s house.

At Shrugging Pines, Kip Finkle (Sean Hayes) is telling Carol and Nathan about the place. He couldn’t get the DVD player to work, so he recited the whole video from memory. He mentions being an umpire for Marco Polo and when Carol goes silent, he teases her about being a peeker. He tells them that the job is his life and he even has a place in the back. Then, he ends up flirting with Nathan, telling him that he spent nights with his ex-partner watching Nathan go up and down the street. He then tells them they have a waiting list with nine people ahead. He scares them when an alarm goes off, as if someone died, but it was just the lunch bell.

Back at the apartment, Ray is over as Carol tells Nathan he should have flirted with Kip and remarks that she spent plenty of time flirting with people she wasn’t into to get him things, such as space camp. When she goes upstairs, Ray tells Nathan there’s no shame in flirting with a guy and he has done it, remarking he hasn’t had to pay for soda in years on flights. Nathan reminds him that ginger ale is free.

Kip is in his office when Nathan comes in with his mom’s application. Nathan is dressed in a tight white shirt and shorts, but he does a horrible job flirting, and Kip is quick to notice. He tells Nathan about having the same thing done to him when he was a flight attendant and someone tickled his knees for free ginger ale. He tells Nathan his ex-husband was the one who had a crush on him and he’d do anything to see his face if he saw Nathan flirting. Nathan remarks he’d do anything to get his mom the apartment and they both look at each other. Nathan then goes home to tell Carol “We’re dating” and she asks if he’s joking because if not, “Your father owes me 20 bucks.”

At the apartment, Kip goes over the things Nathan needs to know about dating him, including his past Real World applications. His ex will be over soon with their shared pug, Pugsley. He tells Nathan he has to cram in order to remember things about Kip. Nathan goes into the kitchen to memorize the information while Carol and Kip discuss rotten husbands. When the doorbell rings, it turns out to be Ray, who Nathan forgot to call to cancel their basketball game. He ends up being part of the ruse as a New York chef who lived in an orphanage.

Later, Kip and Nathan are keeping up the ruse with Leon, the ex, watching. They end up messing up when Nathan says they spend every day together, but Leon knows since Kip is in the National Guard for two days a month, this is unlikely. Nathan messes up again when he says he stayed in Kip’s car when he drives a scooter.

Nathan goes in to talk to Ray, who tells him to commit to the role he is in. So Nathan goes out and plants a kiss on Kip’s lips, who freaks out over having a straight guy kiss him. Leon realizes it was just a ruse and he berates Kip for trying to keep getting him back. He leaves to go get Pugsley and Carol tells Kip it is not his fault and he should stand up to Leon.

When Leon comes back, he is about to take Pugsley when Kip yells at him in pig latin. He takes the dog and slams the door in his face. Later, we see Carol with a box as she prepares to move out and into the apartment next door with Kip. Nathan tells them he will see them after the holidays and leaves, where he strikes a match in the hallway.
