“Eyes Open, Head Up, Trust No One”
Abbie is having a dream about being in purgatory and her mother is there singing a song from her childhood. Ichabod arrives at The Archives fighting a cold and Abbie tells him to stay and rest. Abbie gets a call and reports to the police station and Reyes informs her of the three strange deaths that have occurred at Tarrytown Psychiatric. The three deaths were all by suicide and Reyes gives Abbie full control of this investigation. Abbie and Jenny go to Tarrytown Psych and start to investigate by first visiting Irving. Irving says he had nothing to do with this and that he knew the victims. He said that he is still in control of his own actions. Abbie and Jenny visit painful memories of their mother while watching security footage of the suicides. They watch footage of the first victim and when they switch to night vision, they see their mother’s spirit in the room. “She has returned from the grave,” says a shocked Abbie.
Abbie talks to Ichabod about seeing her mother’s spirit and remembers how disturbed her mother was. She always thought she was crazy but looking at it now realizes how much pain her mother was in trying to protect them. Abbie wants to stop her mother from killing these people and has called Nick to help since Ichabod is feeling under the weather. Ichabod has a theory that their mother, Lori, has risen because Tarrytown Psych was built on a specific lay line where there are points of convergence between themselves and the spirit world. Nick gives Ichabod some medicine in his soup that will allow him to rest. Katrina is talking with Henry when she asks about the child. Henry says the boy is an orphan and he wants Katrina to care for him. When she picks up the baby, he touches her neck and we see her skin start to fade to a coal black color.
Abbie, Jenny and Nick are at Tarrytown Psych coming up with a plan to stop Lori and put their mother to rest. They see footage of a patient moments away from committing suicide when they rush to stop him. Abbie sees Lori then immediately vanishes from the room. She appears in the basement of the psych ward and Lori warns her that she is not safe. Jenny arrives and sees that her mother has put the following on the door: TPRJLM12. It is a numeric code used to designate hospital patient sessions. Abbie thinks that Lori is trying to tell them something. Katrina continues to grow closer to the baby. Katrina notices the black shade on her neck and realizes it must be from the baby.
The sisters decide to watch the video sessions of Lori in which they can clearly see that she is disturbed and claiming that the demons are after her daughters. Lori mentions nurse Lambert, the lady they met earlier today, and realizes that Lambert has been with every victim right before their death. We see Lambert arrive to Irving’s room and give him some pills. Irving then under possession attempts to kill himself but Abbie saves him before he can follow through with it. They find out that Gina Lambert has been killing people since the 1950s, even after she passed away. Lambert’s spirit is continuing the work and Lori is trying to stop her.
They visit Lori’s old cell where she did seven straight months of solitary confinement. They tear down the wallpaper and find drawings Lori did of her daughters and lyrics to a song she sang to the girls when they were younger. Lori’s spirit returns and says there is an ancient hex that can stop Lambert. She speaks of a journal that could have the hex right as Lambert returns to kidnap Abbie. Lori tells Jenny and Nick to find the journal and Lori will retrieve Abbie.
Lambert has Abbie captured and claims that she is a broken spirit. Lambert says that she can fix Abbie. Lambert claims that she “fixed” Lori and that it is Abbie’s turn. Abbie is furious that Lambert is the reason her mother committed suicide. Nick and Jenny find the journal and Jenny begins reading the hex which ultimately destroys Lambert. They return to Lori’s old cell to perform a ceremony to summon Lori. Ichabod has joined them and Lori appears and speaks to her daughters. She says she was was always trying to protect them. She says that Moloch sent Lambert to finish her after she was admitted. She tells the girls that the journal is a secret weapon they can use. It is a very emotional time for Abbie and Jenny and now they have some peace with their mother.
They are all driving back from Tarrytown Psych when they see Irving run out of the woods. He escaped during the fight and hopes he can trust Abbie. He jumps into the trunk of their car. We see Katrina coming up with a way to break the curse that is spreading through her. She goes to the crib but the baby is gone. She walks into the kitchen and sees that the baby has already grown into a young child.
