While ABC was able to launch a successful sitcom on Tuesdays last season, the same did not happen this year. After cancelling Manhattan Love Story a few weeks ago, Selfie has now been given the ax.
While Manhattan Love Story ended instantly, the John Cho/Karen Gillan series will be allowed to run its course. The remaining 13 episodes will air, likely in hour-long blocks like it did this week.
Deadline notes that the hour-long block only drew a 0.9 18-49 rating. So, if it does that bad again, ABC will probably have to drop it completely. Of course, ABC would have to find something else to put in there. (Agents of SHIELD repeats before new SHIELD episodes would be a good idea.)
While Selfie, created by Suburgatory’s Emily Kapnek, is meeting its doom, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Ioan Gruffudd’s Forever got a full season. ABC added nine more episodes to the medical drama about an immortal doctor.
Despite Selfie and Manhattan’s failures, ABC is home to the only successful freshman sitcom of the season, Black-ish with Anthony Anderson. NBC has already decided not to order more shows for A To Z and Bad Judge.
ABC has also had success with the new Shonda Rhimes-produced series How To Get Away with Murder and it will have another Marvel series, Agent Carter, premiering in January.
Also, don’t feel bad for Cho or Gillan. Cho plays Sulu in the current Star Trek series, while Gillan, a former Doctor Who star, just appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy.
Last season, ABC featured The Goldbergs on Tuesday. That show did get a second season and now airs on Wednesdays.
