Who knew Jaden and Willow Smith were so existential about their lives?

In a recent interview with T Magazine for the New York Times, the children of Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith gave some of the most unusual answers to interviewer Su Wu, ranging from talking about babies to how they experience time.

Are these kids the next wave of hippies or just pretentious? Regardless of your thoughts, I’ve compiled a list of five of my favorite quotes from the weirdest Q&A session of 2014.

So far, anyway.

1. Music today sucks, according to the Smith kids

When the two admitted that they don’t have a writing process when it comes to their music, Su asked Jaden and Willow Smith what they looked for when piecing together their freestyled music.

“Honestly, we’re just trying to make music that we think is cool. We don’t think a lot of the music out there is that cool. So we make our own music. We don’t have any song that we like to listen to on the P.C.H. (Pacific Coast Highway) by any other artist, you know?” Jaden Smith said.

You know what they say… If you want something done right, you’ve got to do it yourself.

2. On that note, books suck too

Continuing off of Jaden’s music answer, Willow said she does the same thing with novels.

“There’re no novels that I like to read so I write my own novels, and then I read them again, and it’s the best thing,” she said, Jaden to add that she’s been doing this since she was 6 years old.

Step aside Harper Lee. Willow has no time for your shenanigans.

3. Apparently time doesn’t exist

When asked how they spend their time, Willow said that she knows it doesn’t exist because she is able to make it go slow or fast. Jaden backed his sister up by saying that it’s “proven” that where you are in the universe factors in how time moves.

“[O]n the level of being here on earth, if you are aware in a moment, one second can last a year,” Jaden said. “And if you are unaware, your whole childhood, your whole life can pass by in six seconds. But it’s also such a thing that you can get lost in.”

“Because living,” Willow added.

Because living.

4. Stuff is worth having

When asked the question what are the things worth having, where the answers could have been love, family, friendship, etc., Jaden admitted none of the above.

“Something that’s worth buying to me is like Final Cut Pro or Logic,” he said, the two being video and music editing software.

The two then said that anything worth having is something that can shock you.

“The only way to change something is to shock it,” Jaden said. “If you want your muscles to grow, you have to shock them. If you want society to change, you have to shock them.”

I don’t know what kind of fitness regiments he’s doing, but I don’t want to be a part of it.

5. Babies are so aware and shocked by the world

When discussing how breathing and life are forms of meditation, Jaden and Willow started blabbering about babies.

“When babies are born, their soft spots bump: It has, like, a heartbeat in it. That’s because energy is coming through their body, up and down,” Jaden said.

Further research showed that the soft spots are so that a baby’s head can pass through the birthing canal, but I’m not as well-versed in prana energy as the lil Smiths are.

“When they’re in the stomach,” Willow said (I can only assume she meant womb.) “[T]hey’re so aware, putting all their bones together, putting all their ligaments together. But they’re shocked by this harsh world.”
